The 65th annual Grammy Awards will feature a historic segment celebrating hip-hop’s 50th anniversary. It will highlight a mixture of new and veteran artists who’ll showcase the genre’s rich history and modern-day influence throughout the world.
LL Cool J will introduce the segment, which is being produced by musical director Questlove, his manager Shawn Gee, Jesse Collins, Patrick Menton of Fulwell 73 and Fatima Robinson. LL will also give a dedication to hip-hop and take the stage as one of the many performers.
Big Boi, DJ Drama, Missy Elliott, Future, GloRilla, Grandmaster Flash, Lil Baby, Lil Wayne, The Lox, Method Man, Queen Latifah, RUN-DMC, Swizz Beatz and more have also been tapped to represent hip-hop during the segment. The Roots will provide the music, and Black Thought will be narrating.
“For five decades, Hip Hop has not only been a defining force in music, but a major influence on our culture,” said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. “Its contributions to art, fashion, sport, politics, and society cannot be overstated. I’m so proud that we are honoring it in such a spectacular way on the GRAMMY stage. It is just the beginning of our year-long celebration of this essential genre of music.”
The Grammys, hosted by Trevor Noah, will air live Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS and Paramount+.
